In this class students will learn how to create 3-Dimensional pieces of felt using resists, starting with “simple” bowls, and working our way up to pods with protuberances. Students will get a feel for how to plan for the kind of shape they are looking for, as well as how to attach felt appendages securely. This class is available to beginners as we will work our way up to the most complicated aspects, though a basic knowledge of wet felting will be helpful and allow students to go further in their study.
Level of experience required: Beginners to advanced
Student Equipment Requirements:
PLEASE BRING AN OLD TOWEL OR TWO if you can (we’ll dry them between days), but otherwise all materials will be provided if you want for a fee of $25.
- If students want to provide their own supplies and avoid the supply fee, please bring several ounces of merino wool (NOT superwash!), 19 or 21 micron would be best, or even short fiber merino batts. Bringing more than a student might need is suggested, though a student can always purchase more from the instructor if needed (suggested amount is around 8 oz.)
- The Instructor re-uses supplies for classes:
- Balloons in various sizes (7 inches, 9 inches, etc.)
- Packaging foam or floor underlayment (we’ll only be working in sizes under 24 inches square)
- Bubble Wrap
- Mesh fabric (Instructor actually uses ironing board scorch protectors mostly, now, but many felters use various forms of mesh)
- Pool noodles (cut in half lengthwise for our purposes)
- Dowel rods or PVC pipe about 24 inches long
- Soap (Instructor uses baby shampoo, so if students have a preference like Olive Oil soap, students can bring it)
- Hot water kettle
Students MAY be interested in buying their own, but don’t necessarily need these for the class as instructor will bring enough. (Instructor doesn’t sell the ones bought to class because she only has used ones, and doesn’t want to keep buying new.)
Materials fees:
The fee is $25 for all supplies, but less if students supply their own or partial supplies.
